Solvent- and formaldehyde-free phenolic resin derived from salicyl alcohol
The RGFP paper was published in Industrial Crops and Products, with Ph.D. candidate Bo Zhao serving as the first author. This study invents a novel high-performance phenolic resin, namely poly(salicyl alcohol) resin (PHBA), which is synthesized from natural salicyl alcohol through solvent- and catalyst-free polymerization. While effectively reducing dependence on fossil resources, the cured resin achieves excellent thermal stability and mechanical performance. Thanks to its tunable viscosity, PHBA is compatible with advanced solvent-free manufacturing processes and can be reinforced with natural fibers or carbon fibers to create formaldehyde-free composites, showing great promise for environmentally friendly aerospace and construction applications.
