Title: Vapor-liquid equilibrium for mixtures of water, alcohols, and ethers

Abstract: Vapor-liquid equilibrium data for five binary systems and a quaternary system, which were ethanol-water, ethanol-tert-butyl alcohol, ethanol-ethyl tert-butyl ether, tert-butyl alcohol-ethyl tert-butyl ether, tert-butyl alcohol-water, and water-ethanol-tert-butyl alcohol-ethyl tert-butyl ether were measured respectively with a modified Rose equilibrium still under isopiestic pressure (0.1013 MPa). The data are correlated with the UNIFAC and Wilson models. The predicted vapor-liquid equilibrium for these systems agreed well with the experimental data.

Title: Estimating kinetics parameters in synthesis of ethyl tert-butyl ether by using genetic algorithm

Abstract: Genetic algorithm was used to estimate the kinetics parameters for the synthesis of ethyl tert-butyl ether from ethanol and tert-butyl alcohol on strong acid cation exchange resin S-54. The standard genetic algorithm was modified by using multiple crossover and mutation strategies instead of simple strategy. The modified genetic algorithm avoided the problem of local optimum and showed higher estimation precision and better convergence than the traditional algorithm of Runge - Kutta. The influences of genetic strategy and the genetic code representation on algorithm performance were also discussed. The calculation results using these parameters obtained with the modified genetic algorithm agreed well with experimental data.

Title: Catalytic reactive distillation coupled with pervaporation for synthesizing ethyl tert-butyl ether

Abstract: The synthesis of ETBE from ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) was studied by using cation exchange resin as catalyst via reaction, reactive distillation, reaction with pervaporation. Catalytic reactive distillation coupled with pervaporation is restudied for the synthesis of ethyl tert-butyl ether from EtOH and TBA. A mathematical model for this combined process is developed. The model incorporates complex reaction kinetics, vapor-liquid non-idealities, distillation and pervaporation process. The rapid solution for this model can be obtained by modified overrelexation method. Simulation results are in good agreements with the experimental results. Some operating parameters are also optimized.

Title: Synthesis of ethyl tert-butyl ether on pellets cation exchange resins

Abstract: Cylindrical pellet catalyst was made from strong acid cation exchange resin S-54 particles. Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) was synthesized with this kind of catalyst by using ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) as the starting materials. Experiments were carried out in the liquid under atmospheric pressure with a stirred batch reactor. Mechanism studies have shown that three reactions (dehydration of TBA, EtOH with TBA, and isobutene (IB)) with (EtOH) take place simultaneously. It was found that catalyst size and stirring speed had no significant effect on reaction rate. Other influence factors, such as temperature, catalyst amount, molar ratio of ethanol to tert-butyl alcohol and the effect of water inhibition on synthesis reaction were studied. A kinetics model, which included seven parameters, was obtained by curve fitting method. The experimental results agreed well with the model. The kinetics parameters of pellets catalyst was compared with particles catalyst. While the catalytic activity of pellets catalyst was lower than particles catalyst for the reason of the shield action of binder, however, it would be useful in the larger scale production of ETBE.
