III. 略暦
刁東風教授は国際的に活躍されているマイクローナノスケールの観点から表面サンインスとエンジンニャーリングを開拓している研究者であり、機械工程、材料工程、接触力学、プラズマ物理及びトライボロジーの最先端技術を集積して、ECRナノ構造表面の設計加工製造/トライボロジー性能の解析と測定/ナノ粒子及び
自然黄沙の実験室模擬及び運動制御/FEM-MD接触力学解析などに関する研究を行う特徴で知られている。

Dongfeng Diao had studied from 1988 to 1992 in Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tohoku Univeristy(Sendai, Japan) to earn a Ph.D in the area of “Spalling mechanisms of ceramic coating in indentation and sliding”.  After the study, he was appointed in 1993 as a Research Associate at same department and started his Faculty of life, in studying FEM analysis of contact mechanics of coated surface, interface fracture mechanics analysis of hard coatings in indentation, in sliding, in-situ-Observation of micro-wear and teaching the Tribo-Test of undergraduate students until 1994. He moved from Tohoku University to Shizuoka University(Hamamatsu campus, Japan) in 1994 where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on Mechanical Behavior of Materials and Tribology, he is also involved in the Nanotribology Doctor Course Program at Shizuoka University. During the period of Shizuoka University, Diao developed a traning course on DLC coating technology in Fuji Industrial Research Institute of Shizuoka Prefecture as a consultant for local industries from 1999 to 2001. Diao had worked for the Computer Microtribology and Contamination Laboratory of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Ohio State University, Columbus from 1996.3 to 1996.8 as a JSPS Research Fellow and an Associated Professor of Shizuoka University, where he developed a “new method for measuring the fracture toughness of thin film in nanoindentation” in collaborated with Dr. X.Li and Professor B.Bhushan. He managed a number of research projects sponsored by Japanese Ministry of Education, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and Technology and many companies during work in Japan. Diao had been a supervisor of 8 MS students(Appendix-I) and taught about 1500 undergraduate students in Shizuoka University from 1994 to 2001.  

Diao was invited to be appointed as a “Tengfei” special professor in Xian Jiaotong University in 2002(XJTU hopes its academic level in world ranging to be improved). He was appointed as
the director of Laboratory of Education Ministry for Modern Design and Rotor-Bearing System in 2003. After moved back to XJTU, he has established a micro/nano particles tribological environmental laboratory for industry; set-up a Mirror-Confinement-type Electron Cyclotron Resonance (MCECR) plasma sputtering system for nanosurface engineering study; designed and made multi-scale ultra precise measurement system for tribological performance. He has made the educational curriculums in collaboration with many universities(Tohoku University, Nagoya University, Tokyo University, OSU, UCB, University Southamption, etc) and the technical projects in collaboration with companies(Hitachi Co., Richo Co., NSK Co., etc). He has managed a number of research projects(Appendix-III)and developed five types of Pin-on-Disk Tribometer for universities and industries. He has founded the "Jiaotong University - Hitachi combination lab" with the Hitachi Mechanical Research Institute. In addition to teaching and research, Diao also devotes significant time to administration duties at the Key Laboratory, his main work includes “Building high level of research and contribution”; “Team building and personnel training” and “Open communication and operation management”.  Every four years, he has faced to a large evaluation event for keeping the position of  Key Laboratory at a higher level. These works promote him to be one of the most interdisciplinary Faculties within the Xian Jiaotong University campus.
     
Over the past fifteen years,   Diao’s research has been at the interfaces of mechanical and materials engineering, surface physics and chemistry, and is characterized by the unique interdisciplinary nature and combination of analytical and experimental techniques that have provided insight into complex surface interaction phenomena. His research is based on the integration of fundamentals from mechanics, materials science, and surface physical chemistry and spans a broad range of length scales, from the macro to nano and molecular levels. The significance of the previous discoveries by Diao is reflected by more than 110 publications in various archival journals, conference proceedings and 10 China patents, the best paper has been cited 96 times, and graduation of 2 PhD and 17 MS students(Appendix-I,II). He has given many invited presentations in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, USA. He has the eligibilities for memberships of China Association of Science and Technology; Japan Society of Tribology; Japan Society of Materials Science and Japan Association of Science and Technology. His biography has been listed in 18th Edition of Who’s Who Books in the world. And he is the Editoral Board of Journal of Tribotest.

His future plans include a Surface Science and Engineering Laboratory of Excellence, with emphasis on the exploration of various surface microprobe techniques for atomic and molecular level surface analysis, deposition of nanometer-thin and smooth diamond like carbon films for reducing adhesion between silicon devices, ultrathin and ultrasmooth amorphous carbon films used in contact nanopositioning device interface, super low friction coefficient carbon-based films used in the various device surfaces like HDD, bearing, etc., synthesized by Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) plasma sputtering method. Among his future teaching plans is the development of a graduate course on Surface Engineering, Tribology, Tribotest; Contat Mechanics for graduate students in the Colleges of Engineering.
