Brief Introduction
Liao Hongjian, PhD, Doctoral Supervisor, was born in Oct. 1962. She is currently a Professor of the School of Human Settlements and Civil Engineering in Xi’an Jiao Tong University. Prof. Liao once held the director of the Dept. of Civil engineering and the vice-dean of the school of Civil Engineering and Mechanics. She graduated with a B.Eng. degree in 1985 and was awarded a M. Eng. degree in 1987 from the Department of Civil Engineering, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology. She did researches as a visiting scholar and later studied for her doctor’s degree from 1991 to 1996 in Japan. She received a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the Department of Civil Engineering, Tokai University, Japan in 1996. From 1996 to 1998, she engaged in the postdoctoral research in Solid Mechanics in Xi’an Jiao Tong University. She had visited NTU in Singapore, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Nagoya Institute of Technology, the University of Tokushima and Kyoto University. Also, She has undertaken several projects with funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, funding from Shaanxi Province Government and funding from the Key Laboratory of Chinese Academy of Sciences. She has published more than 100 papers in academic journals and academic conferences at home and abroad. More than 80 of them are SCI and EI papers. In addition, she has written over 9 textbooks and monographs.

Now, She is the
member of International Society of Engineering Geology and Environment, the member of International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM). She also serves as the director of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the Committee member of Rock and Soil Mechanics Division of Chinese Society of Mechanics, the Committee member of Physical and Mathematical Simulation of Rock Mass Division of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, an director of the Environmental Geo-technical Engineering Branch of the Chinese Rock Mechanics and Engineering Society, and the standing director of Shaanxi Rock Mechanics and Engineering Society. She is an Editor member of Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, an Editor member of Soil and Rock Mechanics, an Editor member of Chinese Journal of Rock Engineering Field, an Editor member of Chinese Journal of Underground Space and Engineering, etc. Her research interests include strength and deformation behavior of geotechnical material, constitutive relations, exploitation of underground space and slope stability, anti seismic studies and prevention and remediation of geological disasters.
