- CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 is an appealing yet challenging research topic for CO2 reutilization. A newly-developing and promising way of photo-thermal catalytic (PTC) reaction was applied for CO2 conversion to CH4. Herein, NiRu/ZrO2 was used to photothermal CO2 methanation, in which higher catalytic activity of Ru doped Ni/ZrO2 than Ni monometallic catalyst was observed. With Ru doping optimal temperature conditions was effectively decreased and CO2 conversion rate was also promoted with almost 100% CH4 selectivity. The catalysts characterization results revealed that NiRu/ZrO2 exhibited better optical absorption performance, higher temperature of CO2 resolved peak and higher binding energy of Ni2+ peak, indicating an enhanced alkalinity as well as strong interaction between Ni substance and ZrO2 carrier in the presence of Ru. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed Ru addition had a positive effect on CO2 adsorption and can lower energy barrier of CO2 decomposition and C species hydrogenation.
