- on–electron exchange at the metal–hydrogel interface results in an unusual failure mode in hydrogel ionotronic devices: electrochemical breakdown. The electrochemical breakdown causes the devices to fail at low voltage and limits the lifetime. Through a combination of theory and experiment, we show that the failure mode and mode transition in hydrogel ionotronics are determined by three material properties: the electrical breakdown strength of the dielectric elastomer, the capacitance of the metal–hydrogel interface per unit area, and the electrochemical window of the hydrogel electrolyte.
