摘要:
This research adopts a case study approach to an analysis of archaeological discovery-led heritage tourism in Xi’an, China. It focuses on a recent archaeological discovery-led heritage project, the DPHS in Xi’an,which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Silk Roads in 2014. The DPHS witnessed one of the most brilliant periods of China’s history - the Tang Dynasty (618-907). However, the Palace succumbed to natural deterioration and fires in wars, leaving limited on-ground architectural remains. During the last half century, the DPHS became one of the most depressed areas in Xi’an. In 2007, Xi’an Municipality launched the DPHS archaeological discovery-led heritage park development as part of the city’s urban regeneration initiative. Three years later, the project was completed and the DPHS Park is open to the public.Besidesthe planning documents obtained fromXi’an Qujiang Daming Palace Heritage Site Preservation and Development Office (DPHSPDO, 2015) and Xi’an CityPlanning Bureau (XCPB), field observations and face-to-face semi-structuredinterviews with tourists and local residents were conducted in the DPHS Park from September to October 2013. About 110 randomly sampled questionnaires were distributed and 100 valid ones were returned, among which 44% respondents were local residents and others were tourists. The questionnaires include 15 critical factors covering various aspectsfromvisitor motivation, heritage conservation approaches, display methods, tourist experience and satisfaction, heritage environment landscape, local community impacts, to relevant facility construction.
