新闻摘要如下:
High-speed cameras capture the frantic forward flight mechanics of mosquitoes
Although mosquitoes are mostly despised by humans, these tiny insects possess many unique adaptations that have attracted attention from researchers. One of these is their distinctive flight pattern, which differs from most other insects. Previous research has analyzed the flight of mosquitoes while hovering in place, but not while flying forward. Using a trio of synchronized high-speed cameras, a team has captured the frantic wing motions that make these insects’ forward flight so unique. They recorded Aedes togoi mosquitoes as they flew forward in a flight chamber and applied fluid dynamics equations to model the aerodynamic forces on their wings. Their analysis showed that the mosquitoes employed a forward flight pattern unlike that seen in other insects: They rapidly adjusted the acceleration and pitch of each wing to generate thrust while maintaining horizontal wing strokes.
