(1.)Basic Information

   Prof.Rikard Holmdahl

Swedish, graduated from Uppsala University, with both a PhD (1985) and a MD (1987) exam. His research focus was studies of chronic inflammation, in particular the use of animal models for autoimmune diseases. In 1994 he became a professor at Lund University, Sweden, and built the Medical Inflammation Research (MIR) laboratory. In 2008 he became a professor at Karolinska Institutet and moved the MIR laboratory to Stockholm. Since 2014 he is a member of the Nobel assembly.
Rikard Holmdahl is an international leader in the research using animal models for autoimmune disease and has developed and characterized several models for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis arthritis and multiple sclerosis. He also introduced the identification of genes underlying complex inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and encephalomyelitis in animals. He is also a scientific advisor and consultant for biotech and biomedical companies. He has published approximately 450 peer-reviewed papers and 50 reviews in scientific journals.

(5.)Scientific Research

  • To identify and functionally analyse the genes that control animal models for chronic inflammatory diseases, mainly using models for rheumatoid arthritis

  • To use the animal models not only for understanding the basic mechanism of autoimmune disease and for developing new diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic strategies

  • To understand the role of MHC class II genes in explaining the immune specificity of autoimmune disease
