The 26th International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2010) was held from August 19-27, 2010 in Hyderabad, India. Upon the invitation of the congress, Prof. Zongben Xu delivered a 45-minute talk titled Data modeling: Visual psychology approach and L1/2 regularization theory.
The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is the largest congress in the mathematics community. Renowned as the Olympic of the community, the congress is held once every four years under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The Fields Medals, the Nevanlinna Prize, and the Gauss Prize are awarded during the congress’ opening ceremony, and outstanding mathematicians around the globe are invited to give talks at the congress. The 45 minute speaker is recommended by the Program Committee (appointed by the IMU for the ICM 2010) based on the major advancement in relative areas of mathematics around the world in the past four years. Prof. Zongben Xu received the invitation from Congress Chair Prof. M.s. Raghunathan as a speaker in the section of the Mathematic in Science and Technology.
It is recognized as a great honor to be invited to give a talk at the congress, which signifies world-wide attention and recognition for one’s work. Prof. Zongben Xu is the recipient of National Natural Science Award of China (Second Prize) and CSIAM Su Buchin Applied Mathematics Prize for his contribution to the inter-disciplinary research of mathematics and information technology. This invitation implies that our university has gained the upper hand in some areas of applied mathematics in the world. Up till now, only 8 Chinese mathematicians have ever been invited to give 45 minute talks at the Congress held outside China, including luogeng Huo, Wenjun Wu, Jingrun Chen, Kang Feng, Gongqing Zhang, Zhiming Ma, Gang Tian, Zhiming Chen.
