Membrane technology has become increasingly important in chemical, biological, and materials engineering, especially bipolar membranes (BPMs) technology, which has received widespread attention due to its unique ion-conversion ability. This paper first introduced the basic principles of bipolar membranes; subsequently, it discussed the structure, working principle, and preparation methods of bipolar membranes and provided a detailed overview of the critical factors affecting the performance of bipolar membranes, including the catalyst for hydrolysis dissociation, the selection of membrane materials, and the optimization of the operating conditions; finally, the application cases of bipolar membrane electrodialysis technology in clean production, wastewater treatment, recovery, and preparation of organic acids and amino acids were analyzed in depth, showing its performance in different applications. Despite the significant progress in the theory and application of bipolar membrane technology, issues such as stability, durability, and cost-effectiveness still need further addressing. Future research should focus on the development of novel bipolar membrane materials, exploration of efficient catalysts for hydrolysis dissociation, and integrated applications with other technologies for more efficient and economical industrial processes.
