- It’s 2 years anniversary for me to visit American, I’d like to write something for the memorable trip.It’s a exchange visiting program between Texas A&M University and Xi’an Jiaotong University, in May 2006, 3 staff of TAMU student affair had visited our campus, and in Oct. as a return visit, 5 members of XJTU student affair had flied to US , luckily, the team included me.We’d flied from Beijing to Nework, then flied from Nework to Huston, Maggie, Marti and Leslie waited in George Bush international airport(Huston) to welcome us, after 2 hours drove, we got in College Station at 2 o’clock the next day. the trip cost approximately 20 hours, a long trip.In the following 21 days we visit Texas A&M University, Texas State University and Baylor University, but most time we been in College Station, after a brief welcome ceremony in Vice President’s House, we 5 had divided to different department for our visiting and learning. Dr. Song focus on the mechanism of university management and campus culture, Dr. Yang focus on career consultation, Mr. Zhou interested in financial assistant and Ms Zheng was attracted by student activity, My main task was work in Student Counseling Service, briefly SCS.I got a small office in SCS, a computer and internet access were provided, I also got a new e-mail address based on SCS local network, everyday, I had observed how SCS work and interview to the psychologist, psychiatrist and counselor, I know how helpline work from Susan, the helpline coordinator of SCS, I learned what was QPR from Kerry Hope, after 2 hours lesson, I got a QPR Gate Keeper certificate.There were nearly 30 counselors worked in SCS, but the Handeson Hall (the building SCS located) always keeped order and quiet, every counselor work in his or her own office, the receiver distribute the clients to different counseling room. There were a big hall beside the receiver room, some tables and comfortable chairs in it, students can read magazines and books there and enjoy their free coffee.In a weekend, Leslie drive us to San Marcos and Maco to visit Texas State University and Baylor University, I had happy interviews with directors of these two university counseling center. We also visit Austin, the capital of Texas, touched the history of Texas in a Museum, we had a river walk in San Antonio, a city full of Mexico culture, the Mexico food is delicious, in a Mexico restaurant, four singer sing Mexico song for customs, big Mexico hat and noisy music impressed me.Three weeks visiting was happy and busy and full of curious, I not only acquired knowledge about counseling, but also understood American culture better. The beautiful campus and effective work of US university reminded us, we must do our best to improve our work, we trust, tomorrow should be better.
