    Abstract: With the advantage of high efficiency and wide zero voltage switching range, inductor-capacitor-inductor (LCL) resonant converter has become a promising topology in bidirectional power flow scenarios. The commonly used modulation strategy is multi-phase-shift, among which triple phase shift (TPS) can reach the highest efficiency owing to the most modulation degrees-of-freedom (DOFs). However, when adopting TPS strategy, existing literatures only design phase shift angles elaborately without considering circuit parameters design, so there is still room for improvement of the converter efficiency. Thus, this paper proposes a novel design methodology which simultaneously optimizes the modulation DOFs and circuit parameters. This paper introduces a universal dual-loop optimal design flowchart for all types of bidirectional DC-DC converters under multiple DOFs modulation. The circuit parameters are traversed in the outer loop. For each set of circuit parameters, the modulation DOFs are optimized in the inner loop. Therefore, the optimal circuit parameters and modulation DOFs can be obtained simultaneously. Additionally, the principle for bidirectional power flow is proposed: the optimal phase shift angles for forward and reverse power flow are opposite. Finally, a 900 W LCL converter prototype was built. The circuit parameters designed in this paper can improve the peak efficiency by 2.20% compared to the circuit parameters in the existing literature, showing the superiority of the proposed design methodology.
