Abstract: Renewable energy systems require converters with a wide voltage gain range and high efficiency. Traditional LLC converters suffer from limited gain and efficiency degradation under wide voltage range operation. Stacked LLC converter introduced more operation modes to reach wider gain range, but there lacks an integrated design method for the mode boundaries and resonant parameters. This paper presents an optimal design method for three‑mode stacked LLC converters, including half‑bridge mode, three‑level mode, and double‑frequency mode. A high precision time‑domain model is applied in the design process. The mode boundaries and resonant tank parameters are jointly optimized, with the switch losses as the optimization objective, zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation and gain range as constraints. Compared with the conventional fixed-boundary design, the proposed method reduces the resonant current effectively and improves the full-range efficiency. A 500 W prototype is built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
