- To explore vortical flows by discussing the new developments in the mechanics, the physical models, and the engineering applications, an international conference on Vortex Flows and Vortex models, ICVFM, was established in Kobe, Japan in 1999. After the successful 1stICVFM, it continued to be held: the 2ndin Istanbul, Turkey (2001), the 3rdin Yokohama, Japan (2005), the 4thin Daejeon, Korea (2008), the 5thin San Leucio, Italy (2010), the 6thin Nagoya, Japan (2014), the 7thin Rostock, Germany (2016) and the 8thin Xi’an, China. The every ICVFM gathered more than 60 participants, such as researchers, engineers and students, from all over the world. Building on the success of the previous serial conferences, ICVFM has become the most famous, extensive, spectacular event in vortex-related conferences for its high level. After Rostock 2016, this conference was renamed as International Conference on Vortex Flow Mechanics, to extend the topic and keep the same abbreviation.
In view of the success of this conference of ICVFM2018 and high quality of conference paper, the organizing committee and the chief
editor of Aerospace Science and Technology all proposed to publish a special issue. The special issue includes twelve selected high-qualitypapers which represent some of the latest research in the fundamental and modeling of vortex flow that can be used solve the multi-scaleproblem of the turbulence, to predict unsteady loadings on engineering devices, to forecast the weather, etc. They should be of wideinterest to researchers working in the relevant areas.
