(1.)Basic Information

The Oriental Face Database is constructed by the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (IAIR) for Advanced Computer and Communication Technologies. The construction of the Oriental Face Database aims to develop new techniques, technology, and algorithms for the automatic recognition of human faces, as well as support the work of realistic human face rendering by providing large-scale face images with different sources of variations. For example, viewpoint and illumination would be used to advance the state-of-the-art face recognition technologies aiming at practical applications especially for Orientals.

Capture System Setup

Multi-angle CCD/Digital Camera System

The system is set in a room of 5×5×2.5 cubic meters. 19 MDC-FZ30 Panasonic digital cameras numbered from 0 to 18 (C0-C18) are installed one by one with an angle spacing of 10 degrees along a semicircular bracket. The platform of the cameras distributed on the rectangular shelf is illustrated in the following figure.

Multi Lamp-house Distributed System

In order to achieve equal and identical light as well as facility control, the photography room is completely closed, using Softlights and the lights in the ceiling to simulate natural sunshine. It is placed as in the following figure.

(3.)Education

In the Oriental Face Database Viewpoint Database, each individual is asked to look at the camera named C9 in the center, by adjusting the chair to keep the height of the individual's eyes at 1.3 meters. 19 images are photographed by the Multiangular CCD/Digital Camera System, every ten degrees an image. Some examples from the viewpoint sub-dataset are as follows:

(4.)Honors

We use the open-close combinations of 3 independent lighting sources (D0~D2, the lighting sources of frontal, left, and right) to generate 8 different illumination effects in this dataset. A single camera (C9-1) is placed in front of the human face for capturing. Some exmple images are shown as follows:

(5.)Scientific Research

Currently, the Oriental Face Database is free to share with universities and research institutes for research purposes only. To obtain a copy of the Oriental Public Face Database, please do as follows:

(1) Write a formal cover letter requesting the database. The letter should contain the requesting institution's own letterhead (or indicate the full name and the address/telephone number of your institution). The cover letter should be signed by the applicant.

(2) Download the Oriental Face DatabaseRelease Agreement, read it carefully, and complete it appropriately. Note that the agreement should be signed by a full-time staff member (that is, a student signature is not acceptable). Email this agreement together with the cover letter to us.

(3) On the arrival of the two documents above, we will verify your request and reply you the account information of the main download site and the mirror site for downloading the database through Internet.

(4). Besides the main site in XJTU, China, thanks to the Vision and Security Technology (VAST) Lab at the University of Colorado, USA for providing the North American mirror site. Authorized user can choose either site for the database downloading.

(5) Any other questions on the face database, please contact us.
