摘要：

Rapid economic growth and fast urbanisation have brought enormous pressure to heritage conservation in historic cities of China since the 1990s. Many cities appeared the phenomenon of identity crisis due to massive construction of high-rises and office blocks. Cultural genes, as basic elements of a historic city to represent its cultural identity, play an important role in the context of cultural globalisation. It is of great importance to inherit the cultural genes of urban heritage to safeguard the identity of a city. This paper takes two historic districts, namely Xintiandi and Tianzifang in Shanghai as examples to discuss how a modern city accommodates cultural genes to meet people’s living demands.
