课题组与合作者基于实验室光谱测量、理论模拟及其与天文观测红外发射谱的比对和分析，提出富勒烯-金属复合物可能为宇宙未证认红外发射谱带的潜在载体物质。研究工作以“Buckyball-metal Complexes as Potential Carriers of Astronomical Unidentified Infrared Emission Bands”为题发表在国际著名天文期刊ApJ上，有望帮助人们破解困扰天文学和天体物理学领域数十年的一个谜团。

国际著名天文学家和天体物理学家Pascale Ehrenfreund在英国New Scientist的报道中评论到：This type of laboratory information is essential for identifying the existence of these molecules in future, …… we need lab data on their spectral signature in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, she says, as those signals would be more unique to metal complexes.
