Abstract: Hollow fiber membrane is employed to separate water from organic mixture (ethanol-water, tert-butyl alcohol-water, ethanol-tert-butyl alcohol-water mixture) with pervaporation technique. The expressions of separation factor, permeation rates and pervaporation separation index are defined mathematically for the system. The relationship of these parameters is examined at the separation condition. It is found that the pervaporation separation index increases monotonically with the temperature and concentration of water. A peak is observed when the flow rate is increased.

Abstract: The synthesis of ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) with ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) by using A-15, S-54 and D-72 strong acid cation exchange resins as catalysts was studied. The catalyst activity and selectivity of these resins were discussed under experimental conditions of the reaction temperature, catalyst amount, reactant molar ratio and effect of water inhibition. Comparing their activation energies and inhibition coefficients of the water, it could be concluded that the D-72 has a higher level of the activity and S-54 has a higher level of the selectivity and lower effect of water inhibition for the production of ETBE.

Abstract: Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) was synthesized by ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) in the liquid phase using strong acid cation exchange resin, S-54, under atmospheric pressure. The effects of temperature, catalyst concentration, initial molar ration on the reaction rate were discussed. The adsorption inhibitor effect of water on catalyst activity and the decrease of volume were studied. A model which considered the above factors was obtained. The experimental results agreed well with the model.

Abstract: Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) was synthesized by etherification of ethanol (EtOH) with tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) coupled with pervaporation. The strong cation exchange resin, Amberlyst 15 was used as catalyst. The experimental apparatus consisted of a stirred batch reactor and membrane module. The permeation flux and selectivity of water in the membrane were investigated in water-alcohol system. The difference between etherification with or without pervaporation was studied. A model is obtained which takes into consideration the decrease in volume caused by the dehydration of TBA, adsorption inhibitor effect of water on catalyst activity and permeation flux of water by pervaporation. The experimental results agree well with the model.
