IEEE Life Fellow, IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society former President, Professor of University of Pennsylvania、Senior Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University, Dr. Jan Van der Spiegel visits XJTU on Jan. 8th with his presentation on the topic of “From Bio-inspired Imagers to Brain-Machine Interfaces: Synergy between Engineering and Biology”.

Prof. Van der Spiegel introduced the biological background, application fields, research progress of biology-based CMOS polarization vision sensor and his team's work in this area. The presentation began with the use of polarized light information to conduct navigation, and discussed a series of techniques using CMOS technology to realize the polarization sensors.

Prof. Van der Spiegel also introduced the research of Brain-Machine Interface, which has received much attention in recent years. He described the research directions from the biological mechanism and the application field of brain-computer interface to the future human health and the contribution of the entire human society. Prof. Van der Spiegel's team, in collaboration with researchers from Johns Hopkins University, revealed that the animals’ behavior can be controlled by the brain-computer interface through the closed-loop BCI.
